New Dislike of Stereotype

| Tuesday, September 16, 2008

As I have said before, I am a new Graphic Design major, which means that I am mixed with all types of Art majors for my first couple of intro classes. Now, I didn't think that my fellow Art majors would be that much different then my fellow Communication majors...but I was wrong. Stereotype for an Art major, what is it? Does your mind think of someone who looks like me? Or someone who looks like this:

Now I did expect to see Art majors who were creative in their look like this and I have nothing against it. Honestly, I wish I had the guts to dye my hair a random color. But what makes me dislike the majority of Art students like this, is because they feel that they have a more creative mind then those students who don't have 100 face piercings, pink, blue, and green hair, and wear designer clothes. Those people's looks are too conventional, not creative. I find this funny because the people that I have fun into lately who look like what I described, look down on people who look like me thinking that they have a more creative mind. They try to correct me when asking questions or while designing something as if they know more. When in reality, they think that their as deep as an ocean that they miss the point of going to college at hand. I am going to college simply to learn more about something I love so that I can make money from it. Thats why I was told a lot of Fine Art majors don't respect Graphic Designers becaure they use their design skills for money. So what? You can be true to yourself and make money, thats the whole reason why your dishing out hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to college.

So to those three girls who obviously don't read this, I like how you think you are more creative then me because I have a natural hair color, only a couple ear piercings, and because I dress with things from American Eagle. I look like I do because I like to be natural, I don't want to be stereotyped as just another Art student who thinks that their so much cooler because they have a gauged ear and a Mohawk. Dress, look, and act how you feel, not to be different. Do what makes you happy. I like to look real, natural, and professional so when it comes time to get a job so that I'm not just another starving artist, I won't just give off the impression as a stereotypical Art major, I'll stand out from the rest. And to any fellow Artists that I may have offended by this, you can't tell me that you look down on people who don't "look creative" when they damn well may actually have a better vision and more experience then you. Oh and also, it's my blog so I can really say whatever I want. Too those of you who do look different because you chose to be that way and didn't follow the crowd, I do give props to you. No more rambling. Bye bye, stay creative you sexy beasts. ;-)

Spore

| Friday, September 5, 2008

Call me a nerd, call me a dork, call me whatever you want, I don't care. But I have to just say that I am so excited about the new release of the PC/Mac game Spore. The game will be released in 2 days (September 7th) and I am highly anticipating this game. I did try out the Spore creature creator where you only get to make your Spore, and I already was immediately sucked into the game.
The game will now feature creating your own creatures (basically from putty) and evolving them throughout the game. There is also an online feature that allows you to create your own Spore civilization. So far it looks like a more kiddish Warcraft play when it comes to civilization mode.
So you can be sure that I am most likely going to be going out on Sunday to buy this game as long as it is easy to find and I have the guts to spend my ever dwindling college money on the game for $49.99. Maybe you'll see me on the Spore inter web shortly. Be afraid.

Mac vs. PC

| Wednesday, September 3, 2008

With the new article that I read about Microsoft hiring Jerry Seinfeld in its new ad campaign against apple, I decided this would be a good time to touch down on the Mac-PC war that has become more noticeable to me in the past couple years. An article written for the New York Times states that, "Microsoft Corp, weary of being cast as a stodgy oldster by Apple Inc.'s advertising, is turning for help to Jerry Seinfeld." Their campaign is going to be focused around how Mac has too many firewalls and Windows does not. Let the battle begin!
I have been a Mac user for 3 years now and have no complaints at all. However, I seem to find that the devoted PC users try to get under a Mac users skin by saying things like, "you don't even have a left click." This obviously means that they have never used a Mac before because it does have a left click. I even use a generic mouse on my laptop and everything works on it. Now I'm not here to bash PC's because I even have a platform on my Mac that allows me to switch from a PC and Mac interface whenever I want. PC is good, but I do admit that it is slower and freezes so much more then my Mac ever has. I see PC as a work computer and a Mac as a creative computer. This ad campaign shouldn't be geared towards bashing Macs, it should be towards their new touch screen programs or how they've solved the glitches in Vista. This one is up in the air though. If you have a say, leave a comment, discuss it. I want to see people's arguments between the two or about the new advertising campaign. Maybe we can find some kind of common ground where PC users actually take the time to use a Mac before they judge, and where Mac users can remember how the PC did have its up sides back before you converted to Machintoshism.

An Introduction

|

I am in Training....

Not to be in the army, not to compete in the Olympics, not even to be something awesome like an astronaut or a sumo wrestler. (It could happen) No, I am in training to become The Media. I am a Communications Major with a concentration in Video and an Art Major with a concentration in Graphic Design. I try to get everything I can out of the media and technology as well as have an artistic side. This blog is to help you to get everything you can out of the media as well. I will also add in personal entries about my life that you may find interesting. The main purpose here is to help people to stop taking the media for granted. I learn about it everyday, I use it every day, and I just want to show you all the things that you may not know about any media form like YouTube, MySpace, Blogs, TV, Movies, Radio, anything. As well as giving you a first look at upcoming gadgets, movies, music, and everything in between. And make sure to comment to discuss because what's the point of a voice if you can't use it. This is, Lauren's Side of the Story, read on.
